1. Bajada and the Abreeza Area: Best Overall for First-Time Visitors
Bajada is one of the easiest areas to recommend to first-time visitors. It provides access to shopping, restaurants, cafés, hospitals and major roads. Abreeza Mall is also in this area, making it convenient when you want somewhere air-conditioned to eat, shop or spend a rainy afternoon.
Bajada is a practical base for travellers who want to explore different parts of the city without staying directly in the busiest downtown streets. It is not necessarily the quietest area, but it offers a useful balance between convenience and comfort.
Choose this area if you want restaurants and shops nearby, plan to use Grab or taxis, and prefer a central base.
2. Downtown and Poblacion: Best for City Sightseeing
Downtown Davao is a practical choice if you want to be close to city landmarks, markets, government offices and cultural attractions.
Depending on your exact location, you may be near People’s Park, San Pedro Cathedral, Museo Dabawenyo, Roxas Night Market and other central destinations. Downtown can also suit business travellers with meetings or appointments in the city centre.
Some streets can be busy during weekdays and rush hour. Check the exact location rather than assuming every property advertised as central is within comfortable walking distance.
3. Lanang: Best for Airport Access and Upscale Convenience
Lanang is popular with travellers who want easier access to Davao International Airport, SM Lanang Premier, restaurants, convention venues and larger hotels.
It is a good option for short business trips, conferences and early flights. Lanang can feel more commercial than residential, and prices may be higher than in some southern parts of Davao.
4. Matina and Ecoland: Best for Shopping, Dining and Families
Matina and Ecoland are popular areas in southern-central Davao. They offer access to SM City Davao, restaurants, schools, terminals and residential neighbourhoods.
These areas can work well for families, domestic travellers and visitors with activities in the southern part of the city. They are also practical when travelling by car, although traffic can build around commercial areas.
5. South Davao: Best for a Quieter Residential Stay
Not every visitor wants to stay beside a mall or on a busy main road. South Davao can be a good choice if you prefer a quieter residential atmosphere and do not mind travelling a little farther to reach central attractions.
This type of location is particularly comfortable for longer stays, couples, remote workers and visitors with their own vehicles. It can also suit guests who value privacy and would rather return to a peaceful neighbourhood after a day of exploring.
A quieter location may mean using Grab, taking a taxi or driving instead of walking to tourist attractions.

If you have a late arrival, early departure or one-night stopover, staying near Davao International Airport can reduce travel stress. It may not be the best base for a full sightseeing holiday if most activities are downtown, in the highlands or in southern Davao.
7. Samal Island: Best for a Beach Holiday
If the main purpose of your trip is swimming, relaxing and spending time by the sea, consider staying on Samal Island.
Samal offers beach resorts, inland attractions and accommodation for different budgets. However, it is not always convenient if you plan to spend most days attending appointments or exploring mainland Davao. For many first-time visitors, staying in Davao City and taking a full-day trip to Samal offers a good balance.
Should You Stay in Davao City or Samal Island?
Choose Davao City if you want food, shopping, cultural attractions, highland day trips and easier access to urban services.
Choose Samal Island if beaches and resort time are the main reasons for your trip.
If you have enough time, divide your holiday between the two. Spend a few nights exploring Davao City, then finish with a slower beach stay on Samal.
For a short three-day visit, I would normally recommend using Davao City as your base and visiting Samal as a day trip. This avoids changing accommodation and gives you more flexibility.

My Airbnb Accommodation in South Davao

Plan Around Your Main Activities
Write down the places you expect to visit before booking. If most plans are in Lanang, staying in the far south may create unnecessary travel. If you are visiting family or attending an event in southern Davao, paying more for an airport-area hotel may not make sense.
Check the Exact Location
Davao City is enormous. Descriptions such as “near downtown” or “close to the airport” can mean different things. Check the map and estimate travel times to the places that matter to you.
Consider Your Transportation
Grab and taxis are available, but availability and journey times can vary. If you have your own vehicle, confirm whether secure parking is included.
Read the House Rules
