About this Recipe

If you have never tried this savoury cabbage pancake yetthen you’re in for a treat.

This cabbage pancake, also known as Okonomiyaki is a popular food in Japan containing a variety of ingredientsThe name is derived from the word okonomi, meaning “how you like” or “what you like”, and yaki meaning “cooked”

Ingredients

  • 3 cups shredded cabbage
  • 1/2 cup All purpose flour
  • 1 cup spring onion
  • 1 1/2 cup water
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 3 tablespoon oil for pan frying

This savoury cabbage pancake is a low carb classic Japanise dish and what attracted me to this dish is straightforward ingredients, and super easy to make. I also served this okonomiyaki pancake whenever I have guests. They all loved it.

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

In a bowl, add the flour, egg, water, sugar, salt and pepper, mix until you get a homogeneous batter.

Step 2

Roughly chop the cabbage, spring onion and put everything into a batter bowl and fold.

Step 3

Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a frying pan, add half of the batter. Cook the pancake for 4 minutes on one side until golden, flip and cook for another 4 minutes on the other side.

Step 4

Slide the pancake onto a plate or wooden cutting board and repeat with the remaining batter to make a second pancake.

For the sauce:

I used one tablespoon oyster sauce, one teaspoon sugar and one tablespoon ketchup – just mix them all in one small bowl and set aside.

For the Toppings:

The common toppings you will find is thin bacon,  Japanese mayonnaise, dried bonito flakes, green onions and pickled ginger. But in this recipe, I’m only using  Japanese Mayonnaise and hot chilli sauce. It’s good enough for me plus I didn’t want to go to the Japanese store just to buy the topping ingredients.

And..that’s it!! so easy  enjoy!
